Distinguished and Famous people from Burwood
Angus and Malcolm Young
Before AC/DC became an international touring institution, Angus and Malcolm Young were schoolboys in Burwood. Their family moved from Scotland to Australia, initially staying at Villawood before settling in Burleigh Street. Both brothers attended Burwood Primary School and later Ashfield Boys High School. Music was part of the family environment, with older brother George finding success in the Easybeats. Burwood's connection is therefore a real childhood and family-home story, preceding the amplifiers, arena crowds and Angus's much more conspicuous use of a school uniform.
Norman Hetherington
Norman Hetherington grew up in Meryla Street and attended Burwood Public School before becoming an artist, cartoonist and puppeteer. He also took part in a youth theatre group associated with the Burwood Methodist Church. His best-known creation, Mr Squiggle, turned children's scribbles into drawings on ABC television from 1959 to 1999. The apparently simple performance combined drawing skill with careful puppetry. Burwood's school and theatre connections belong to the early development of the man behind the pencil-nosed character.
